Anishinaabe Word of The Day

Pants (giboodiyegwaazon)

Trousers (British English), slacks, or pants (American and Canadian English) are an item of clothing worn from the waist to anywhere between the knees and the ankles, covering both legs separately (rather than with cloth extending across both legs as in robesskirtsdresses and kilts). In the United Kingdom, the word pants generally means underwear and not trousers.[2] Shorts are similar to trousers, but with legs that come down only to around the area of the knee, higher or lower depending on the style of the garment. To distinguish them from shorts, trousers may be called “long trousers” in certain contexts such as school uniform, where tailored shorts may be called “short trousers” in the UK.

Anishinaabe Stories or Other Interesting Facts!

Here are three funny facts about pants:

  1. Medieval Pants Controversy: In medieval Europe, pants (or “hose” as they were called) were often considered scandalous because they revealed the shape of a man’s legs. Some church authorities even tried to ban them, arguing that they were immodest!
  2. Jeans Were Once Workwear: The now-ubiquitous blue jeans were originally designed as durable workwear for miners and cowboys. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented the riveted design in 1873. It’s funny to think that today’s fashion staple was once just practical attire for tough, dirty jobs.
  3. Bell-Bottoms Origin: Bell-bottom pants, famously associated with the 1960s and 70s fashion, actually originated in the U.S. Navy in the early 19th century. The wide-legged design was practical for sailors, as it allowed them to roll up their pants easily when scrubbing the decks or wading through water. It’s amusing how a practical naval uniform became a symbol of counterculture and disco style!
